What will the city of the future look like—and what role will digitalization and artificial intelligence play in it? These were the questions addressed at “Cologne Real Future” on September 8, 2026, in Cologne. As the wvm Group, we sponsored the innovation forum and actively contributed to the discussion on the future of the construction and real estate industries.
Don't just discuss the future—make it a reality
Cologne Real Future deliberately does not see itself as a traditional conference or a traditional trade show. The focus was on a real urban development project: Parkstadt Süd. Spanning approximately 115 hectares, the site demonstrates just how closely urban development, sustainability, economic efficiency, and new technologies are intertwined. The neighborhood served as a real-world laboratory where, among other things, digital twins, data-driven planning, artificial intelligence, and innovative construction methods could be experienced firsthand.
It is precisely this hands-on approach that convinced us as the wvm Group. After all, the digital transformation of our industry isn’t happening sometime in the future—it’s already in full swing today.
AI Is Transforming the Real Estate Industry
From the initial project concept through planning and permitting to construction and operation: artificial intelligence and digital technologies open up new possibilities for streamlining processes and making better decisions.
At Cologne Real Future, it became clear just how diverse the potential applications already are today. Topics ranged from AI-supported design development and automated structural engineering to digital twins and BIM, all the way to data-driven analyses of properties and neighborhoods. Digital construction, prefabrication, and smart building technology were also featured in the numerous showcases.
For us, one point is crucial: technology is not an end in itself. It must create tangible added value—for companies, for projects, and ultimately for the people who live and work in our cities.
From Vision to Implementation
The diversity of perspectives was particularly exciting. Project developers, investors, architects, engineers, technology companies, academia, and the public sector came together to discuss the future of the industry. Five panels, keynote speeches, interactive showcases, and numerous networking opportunities made one thing clear: the major challenges facing the real estate industry can no longer be solved in isolation within individual disciplines.
In our view, this is precisely where the strength of a format like Cologne Real Future lies: Innovation arises where different areas of expertise come together and ideas are transformed into concrete applications.
Cologne Real Future has shown that the question is no longer whether digitalization and AI will transform the construction and real estate industries. The crucial question is how we can actively shape this transformation.
For us as the wvm Group, this means: staying curious, trying out new technologies, gaining experience, and working with partners to develop solutions that work in practice.
After all, the next major transformation in our industry won’t begin on the construction site. It’s already beginning today with the question of how we plan, make decisions, and collaborate.
